Pricing
Current Status: Free
Social Archiver is currently completely free to use with no limitations.
Why Might This Change?
Running Social Archiver requires ongoing infrastructure costs:
Server Costs
- Proxy Crawling Infrastructure: Most social media platforms actively detect and block automated bot traffic. To reliably archive content, we use specialized proxy services that can bypass these anti-bot protections. These services charge based on usage, as they maintain large networks of residential IP addresses to ensure successful content retrieval.
- Web Sharing Platform: Your shared posts are hosted on our servers at
social-archive.org/{username}, which requires hosting and bandwidth. - Database & Storage: We maintain databases and storage systems to manage user accounts and shared content.
Current Approach
As the user base is currently small, these costs are manageable and we're happy to cover them. This allows us to offer the service completely free while we:
- Gather user feedback
- Improve the product
- Build a sustainable community
Future Plans
If operational costs grow significantly as the user base expands, we may need to introduce a pricing model to ensure the service remains sustainable.
We are committed to:
- Providing advance notice before any pricing changes
- Offering a generous free tier for basic archiving
- Keeping the Obsidian plugin itself free and open-source
- Never limiting access to content you've already archived
Transparency
We believe in being transparent about costs and sustainability. If you'd like to support the project:
- Star us on GitHub
- Share the plugin with others who might find it useful
- Contribute to the codebase
- Provide feedback and bug reports
Stay Updated
We'll announce any pricing changes well in advance through:
- GitHub repository updates
- Plugin release notes
- Email notifications (for registered users)
